Big Red Farm Share, August 20

HARVEST

Full Share:
  • 2 heads lettuce
  • 1 quart cherry tomatoes
  • 1 heirloom tomato
  • 1 lb potatoes
  • 1/2 lb summer squash
  • 1 bunch basil
  • 2 bunches herbs -- your choice; we'll probably have parsley, rosemary, sage, thyme, cilantro, and chives.
Half Share:
  • 1 head lettuce
  • 1 pint cherry tomatoes
  • 1 heirloom tomato
  • 1 green or purple pepper (they taste the same!)
  • 1 bunch basil
  • 1 bunch herbs -- your choice; we'll probably have parsley, rosemary, sage, thyme, cilantro, and chives.
Extras:
  • Assorted other tomatoes -- please take what you'll use.
  • Pick-your-own flowers -- up to 10 stems per customer, flower garden is located inside the deer fence, on your left past the greenhouses.  Sunflowers are just starting to come in!
  • Jalapeno peppers

RECIPE

Now that we have big, beautiful heirloom tomatoes starting to come in, it's time to have our annual chat about Panzanella.  This refreshing, hearty, endlessly adaptable summer salad is a staple in our house, where quantities of imperfect farm tomatoes come to be consumed.  You can use whichever seasonal goodies you have on hand; the only constants are tomatoes, day-old bread, and cheese (we like mozzarella and chevre best), plus of course olive oil and a splash of vinegar.  Beyond that, we can and do add many of the following: cucumbers, sweet peppers, pickled onions, scallions, sliced olives, slivered basil, chopped parsley, white beans... let your imagination run wild!


PICK-UP LOCATION AND DETAILS

Share pick-up takes place at the farm, on Thursdays between 3:00 and 6:00pm. Pull into the Lawrence Township community gardens and follow the gravel road uphill to the left. Please remember to return last week's bags and/or containers, and sign in when you take your share. Any payment can be placed in the envelope next to the sign-in sheet. See you at the farm!
